Files is a better Explorer. This is a commander: two folders open at once, source and destination on screen together, and the operation between them is one keystroke rather than a drag.

Files and cwdio want different things. Files is the open-source, community-built file manager that looks and feels like Windows 11 should — Fluent design, WinUI, built in the open with tens of thousands of GitHub stars. cwdio is a keyboard-first dual-pane commander for people who live between a file manager and a terminal: two panels, a shell that follows the panel, verified transfers with a journaled queue, git in the list, batch undo. If you want a prettier Explorer, Files is the better answer. If you want a Total Commander for 2026 with a terminal in it, cwdio is.

Where Files is stronger

  • Open source and community-run. You can read the code, file a pull request, and watch the roadmap.
  • Native look. It is what a Windows 11 file manager should look like, and it follows the system theme and design language exactly.
  • Explorer familiarity. People who like Explorer’s layout will feel at home immediately.
  • Store distribution. Microsoft re-signs a Store package, so it never shows a SmartScreen prompt at all. cwdio is code-signed by its developer, which names a verified publisher but can still prompt until a release has been installed enough times.

Where cwdio is different

  • A commander, not an Explorer. Two panels, F5/F6 across them, Tab between them, orthodox keys.
  • The terminal follows the panel. No other file manager in this comparison embeds a shell that stays in the folder you are looking at — and follows a cd back.
  • Transfers designed for interruption. Verification, resume after a dropped drive, a queue that survives a restart, per-file skip and retry.
  • Undo covers a batch, and overwritten files are stashed instead of destroyed.
  • Remote as folders. SFTP and FTP/FTPS servers, credentials encrypted by the OS, an SSH shell on the same connection.

Who should pick which

  • Choose Files if you want an open-source, native-looking replacement for Explorer’s window and value contributing to a community project.
